Medicare Supplement Plan F vs Plan G

Medicare Supplement Plan F pays 100% of all Medicare-approved expenses. With Medicare Supplement Plan G, you are responsible for paying the Medicare Part B deductible, which for 2018 is $183.00. After you pay the Medicare Part B deductible, Plan G will pay 100% of all Medicare-approved expenses for the remainder of the calendar year. The Medicare Part B deductible is an annual deductible, so you will be responsible for paying it once a year before Medicare Plan G will cover its share of Medicare Part B approved expenses.

Enrolling in Medicare Part A & Medicare Part B

If you are getting Social Security or Railroad Retirement Benefits, you will be automatically enrolled in Medicare. Your Medicare coverage will start the first day of the month you turn 65. If your birthday is on the first day of the month, it will start on the first day of the prior month. If you are not receiving Railroad or Social Security Retirement Benefits, you need to enroll in Medicare Part A & B yourself. You can sign up online, over the phone or in person at any Social Security office.

If you plan to work past 65 or are covered under your spouse’s employer’s plan, ask your employer’s benefits administrator if you are required to sign up for Medicare. If the employer does not require you to sign up for Medicare, you can sign up later without a penalty during a Medicare Special Enrollment Period. In many cases, if you or your spouse’s employer employs fewer than 20 people you will need to sign up for Medicare.
