The City of Glenwood Springs is located at the confluence of the Colorado and Roaring Fork rivers and is the county seat of Garfield County. James Landis homesteaded in the area that would later become Glenwood Springs, in the early 1880’s. Isaac Cooper and John Blake, along with others, purchased Landis’s homestead and developed the local amenities into a resort destination. Trainloads of tourist began arriving in 1887 with the opening of the Denver & Rio Grande railroad.
In 1889 a road-building project was started through Glenwood Canyon and it became the first continuous road to connect Denver to Glenwood Springs and Grand Junction.
Seniors can hike to Hanging Lakes atop the cliffs of Glenwood Canyon or bike or hike on the local trails. Seniors who enjoy water sports will enjoy rafting, canoeing, kayaking or paddle boarding.During the winter active retirees may enjoy skiing and snowboarding at Sunlight Mountain Resort, located just 10 miles south of Glenwood Springs.
