The City of Grand Junction is located in the Grand Valley at the confluence of the Gunnison and Colorado Rivers. Nestled between the Book Cliffs and the Colorado National Monument, Grand Junction is the largest city between Denver and Salt Lake City. I-70 and US Highways 50 and 6 link Grand Junction with the state and the nation. Grand Junction Regional Airport has daily flights to Denver, Salt Lake, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston.
In 1883, Mesa County was created from neighboring counties and Grand Junction was named the county seat. Grand Junction began to thrive when the main line of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad came into the area in 1887. Soon after, major irrigation turned the Grand Valley into a fertile agricultural area.
For seniors that enjoy an active outdoor lifestyle Grand Junction sprawls across the Grand Valley perfectly situated for exploring the wonders of western Colorado and eastern Utah. To the east is the Grand Mesa with lakes, forests, and terrific fall-color displays. To the west is the Colorado National Monument, a mini Grand Canyon of red rock formations, steep drop-offs, and high vantage points. To the south is the lush Western Slope agricultural oasis, fostering everything from wine grapes to peaches that feed more than 20 Grand Valley wineries and local farmers’ markets, respectively. To the north are the Little Book Cliffs, sheer rippled walls of stone that descend from the mesa top to the valley floor.
Seniors who have made Grand Junction their home can enjoy, the streets of downtown Grand Junction that are filled with art galleries, clothing boutiques, antique shops and a variety of restaurants.
